Day 2: A whole new world

Woke up in the morning full of body aches
Friggin cold room man =.=
And thanks to the uber hard bed, we used our blankets as bed sheets, which make it a lot more bearable to lie on
Took an early morning shower in that horrible toilet >.<
And went out for breakfast at Canteen 2!
Only 3 stalls were open though, as it is still the school holidays after all…
The pastry stall, noodle stall and the drinks stall!

I went over to the noodle stall… peered at their menu…
And order 炸酱面!
Don’t know the English name for it, but if I give it a direct translation…
Fried sauce noodles? ><
Not too bad I guess… a bit saltier than I would have usually liked it haha
But I’m not gg to expect too much from China :X

BREAKFAST!

Drinks were something special as well!
In Singapore, we use plastic bottles…
Here? GLASS BOTTLES!
Not exactly what I’ll call environmentally-friendly :P
I got myself tea… and the packaging is special too :O

My tea!
Photobucket
Check out the brand :O
Photobucket
It’s a real tea too… with teabag!

Went to take a walk around the campus after that! Didn’t see that much last night due to the darkness and cloud of fatigue that was surrounding us the night before!
We are basically surrounded by a whole bunch of other hostels, many being female hostels

Photobucket
The entrance to our hostel!
Photobucket
My bunk is the one with the curtains drawn! :P
Photobucket
Edah playing with the phone =.=”
Photobucket
Our hostel! It means East 1, or Block 1 of the East Wing 
Photobucket
And in case you were wondering, yes, there are ATMs here…
But the condition of it just isn’t… erm….as good?
Photobucket
Yes, that’s not a courthouse. It’s the library right there at the background!
Photobucket
Close up!
Photobucket
“Men = No entry!” Welcome to the female hostels 
Photobucket
The hostels!

The flag of the PRC!
Photobucket
Their version of school bus!
Photobucket
No smoking and horning? People are still smoking and horning around the campus anyway…

Of course, you’ll have noticed! This is a very very HUGE campus! I reckon I haven’t even covered half of it! In fact…. I haven’t even seen a single sign of what Dr Tan call the School of Life Sciences… --“

Photobucket
School of Information Engineering!
Photobucket
The pwetty ball right in front of it :D
Photobucket
Nice signage they have here :O
Photobucket
I wonder what do they use this for… looks like a cement mixer!
Photobucket
Apparently, these few days is supposed to be the enrolment of the new first year undergrads! And here are the booths for them to register!
Photobucket
I can’t really see the meaning behind this, but looks pwetty :D
Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
I wonder what the story behind these few words is, I see them around the entire school… Going to ask the lecturer during the Wuhan Campus Tour!
And yeah, I know there are cars blocking the last two :X
Photobucket
公安,directly translates into public safety! They are the police! 
Photobucket
Here we have… an empty packet of cigarettes carelessly dumped around the campus grounds…
Photobucket
And check out the sign! People don’t really care about smoking within campus anyway…
Tony insisted on being in the picture!!! :X
Photobucket
One of the sports China is famous for: Basketball!
So of course there will be basketball courts around :D
Photobucket
Badminton courts!

Bumped into Ryan and co. along the way, and continued our little excursion!
And I finally understand what my brother said by Wuhan being one of 中国四大火炉!
It’s friggin hot!!!

Went to check out the east wing stalls! It consists of 2 mobile phone stalls, 1 book store, 1 drink stall and 1 stall that rents water dispenser!

Went back to hostel after that, and went out with the crowd over to a mobile shop outside to get our china SIM cards! I’m sharing with Jehanne! My number is friggin long too… its right down there, but i won't pick up most of the calls anyway, mostly for me to call out!

Photobucket
Cybercafé!
Photobucket
The mobile shop also does some photo publishing and such ^.^
Photobucket
Waiting for our SIM cards…
Photobucket
My SIM card!
Photobucket
The shop beside us… and I didn’t know China celebrates Teacher’s Day!

Once we got our SIM cards, I and Jehanne went with Dr Tan to get the routers and wires for our internet! And we realized something very very stupid --"
Most of the shops don’t want to sell us… because they scared if we buy all, they got nothing to sell…
Like what the heck? Ahh well, shouldn’t question so much about the way they work. It’s their supplies, and their own right to sell it to who they want to… though in Singapore I’ll have reported to CASE =.=”
Gave up soon after, as the lecturers decide that they will take care of it elsewhere! So Jehanne and I went to find the rest of the group and went over the other side of the road to the supermarket! :D

Photobucket
The supermarket!

Once inside, we had to surrender our large baggage and grab a trolley… and it doesn’t need coins to use! :D
Walked round and round to see what we need, though I and Yee Tat came up with a v short list of what we need! Like basins to wash clothes and such. Sorry for the lack of photos here, I sneaked a few! Cause we aren’t allowed to take photos within these compounds :X

Photobucket
Photobucket
Nope, we aren’t getting these…
Photobucket
YES WE ARE GETTING THESE!

Oh , we also got a bit of rations, water and moth balls for the stinking toilet… >.<

Went back, had lunch at Canteen 2 again – we aren’t too used to the road outside yet…
Back at the same stall since most stalls are closed due to it being the school holidays!
Unlike the morning, the 面 is all gone, and what we have left is 粉… oh well, make do with it XD

Photobucket
This time, I had sweet and spicy noodles… which isn’t exactly good :X

When we got back, we asked our landlady if there is anywhere good for us to shop around this area. Almost without hesitation, she called up someone over at another hostel to bring us over to the nearest mall! :OO

We took 903 over there, 2 bucks per head! Here, they follow the conductor-styled bus system. You board the bus, grab a seat, and the conductor will come over, ask your destination and determine the fare you will have to pay! Sort of reminds me of my Malacca trip earlier this year!

Half an hour later… we saw IT.

But there was a little something we had to do before we actually reach there…

Photobucket
Cross the road. DUH! :P

But on the overhead bridge, we saw a guy with a corpse covered with a straw mat kneeling down with a collection tin. Tony, who is born in China, explained that it means that the guy doesn’t have enough money to bury his family member, and is asking for money to perform a proper burial ><
No photos, for obvious reasons.

It reminds me of a megamall back home. It’s seriously HUGE! No kidding, at the end of the day… We only managed to shop 3 shops there! Kidding, it’s mostly because we spent too much time at the CD shop :X I got a few too! It’s selling for 5 RMB per disc! Meaning that if the movie is a two disc series, it’s only 10 RMB! There’s a wide selection of dramas, movies of Korean, Japanese, Chinese-based and of course, English!

Photobucket
<3 this shop!
Photobucket
A business building across the road… pwetty!
Photobucket
Seems like a bank!
Photobucket
Old-styled telephone booths!
Photobucket
And their basement is numbered in negatives :O

We walked a few minutes over to the bus stop! I was tugged by some sales people, both religious and non-religious to purchase their products, and had a rather hard time shaking them off as they are rather… physical.

Tried to catch a bus, but it took us nearly an hour before the correct bus even came! *great panic*
Basically, we are supposed to take 901外,but what we keep getting is 901内! But well, got back safe and sound… headed over to grab some food... I tried a roadside stall! 老干妈炒饭! Then went back happier than usual...

Why? Cause Dr Tan is back with the routers and wires! I busied myself for the next hour trying to figure out how to get it to work… thanks to Yee Tat, it finally worked! And with Jehanne’s help, the Student VPN was set up! And the whole night long, we were having fun on the msn and getting nagged on taking care of ourselves >.<

===============================================
And so what have I learnt?

-Appreciate what you have in Singapore
(How soft your bed is, how the food is cooked, etc)
-China roads are opposite from Singapore! They use the right lane instead of the left!
-People in China define things differently from us
(When we say bottle, they think of glass bottles first; when we ask for food, they automatically assume it’s a takeaway)
-They have a tendency to disregard rules a fair bit, such as smoking right under the no smoking sign
-They prefer to hold back some stock for themselves even if they can clear it(in sales)
-They can get physical easily to meet their demands
-We are over dependant on internet. If we used more time that we would usually spend online to look around, there’s so much more to explore!
